In conjunction with World Sustainability Day, a media event was held to commemorate the completion of a playground which has been built using recycled shoes materials, at Sekolah Kebangsaan Bukit Tadom, Banting. The occasion was graced by The Excellency, YM Tengku Hishamudin (Crown Prince of Selangor).
EcoKnights in collaboration with Dow and Life Line Clothing Malaysia introduced Malaysia's inaugural recycled playing ground launch, made from the soles of thousands of discarded shoes in Malaysia.
The launch of the SK Bukit Tadom (A)'s newly refurbished playground — made with recycled shoe materials, specifically for the playground surfaces — will be the first of its kind.
Aside from the ongoing efforts to revitalise SK Bukit Tadom (A) in Banting, Selangor, which was impacted by the devastating flood in late 2021, the organisers also hope to create a better environment for the students.
Together, we can create a shoe waste recycling ecosystem in Malaysia that repurposes old shoes into sports surfaces or children's playgrounds. Old Soles New Life.
The Malaysian Petrochemicals Association (MPA) is proud to be a sponsor for the "Old Soles New Life" initiative along with other organisations like Dow, BDP, CICM, etc by sponsoring bins for the public to deposit their old shoes for recycling.

Kuala Lumpur, October 27, 2022. The Malaysian Petrochemicals Association (MPA) fully supports Malaysia’s implementation of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans- Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). The Ministry of International Trade and Industry’s (MITI) commendable efforts in completing the domestic procedures following the mandate received from the Cabinet, has enabled the final submission of Malaysia’s Instrument of Ratification (IOR) for the CPTPP with the depositary in New Zealand to be executed on September 30, 2022.
The CPTPP Agreement has been ratified and implemented in stages since December 2018, by Australia, Canada, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Singapore, Viet Nam and Peru. It will broaden Malaysia's access to new markets such as Canada, Mexico and Peru, which are not covered by any existing Free Trade Agreement (FTA). Malaysian exporters will enjoy duty-free treatment on products such as automotive parts and components, plastics products, surgical gloves, rubber products, textiles and clothing, cocoa products and food items.
It is also encouraging to note that the UK and the People’s Republic of China (PRC), the Chinese Taipei, Ecuador and Costa Rica have also officially applied to join the CPTPP, allowing Malaysian exporters to gain wider and deeper market access opportunities.
The CBA done on the CPTPP projected that the total trade from Malaysia is expected to increase to USD655.9 billion in 2030. On the other hand, exports are projected to reach USD354.7 billion in the same year, with trade balance remaining in strong surplus at 8.5% of GDP for 2030.
Under the CPTPP, by 1 January 2033, almost 100 percent of Malaysian exports to all CPTPP countries will enjoy duty-free treatment. As soon as the CPTPP enters into force for Malaysia, all our exports to Australia and Singapore markets will be without any duties. In 2024 and 2029, all Malaysian products exported to New Zealand and Canada respectively will also be duty-free. Currently duties on key Malaysian exports to Canada and Mexico ranges between 15 to 30 percent.
In essence the CPTPP will co-exist with all other FTAs and will place Malaysia in a strategic position, elevating our competitiveness in the global arena.

The inaugural Petrochemicals Sustainability Conference (PSC) which was held alongside the 18th Oil and Gas Asia (OGA) and the 6th Malaysian Oil & Gas Services Exhibition and Conference (MOGSEC) was successfully held from September 13 -15, 2022 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.
The joint event had a record attendance of 21,000 trade visitors for the exhibition and 361 exhibitors representing over 1,000 industry brands from across the oil and gas, energy, and petrochemicals value chain.
The PSC 2022 conference attracted 627 delegates from local and international shores, and showcased 13 event sponsors such as PETRONAS Chemicals Group, LOTTE Chemical Titan, KANEKA Corporation and BASF, amongst others. The inaugural event was a gathering of petrochemical producers, consumers, academic institutes, government bodies and policymakers, brand owners, non-profit organisations, and other stakeholders to discuss pathways by which Malaysian and regional petrochemicals players within the value chain can support global net-zero ambitions.
What makes PSC 2022 special is that every moderated session has been carefully and specially curated together with our Knowledge Partners, Boston Consulting Group (BCG) and Environmental Resources Management (ERM) both of whom are renowned multinational global consulting firms.
By bringing together key stakeholders including that from the government, industry associations, petrochemical producers, technology and solution providers, brand owners, and supply chain organisation, PSC 2022 was an interactive platform that encouraged conversation, knowledge sharing and engagement amongst industry players and key stakeholders and prompt meaningful discussions on common strategies to support the journey towards Net-Zero ambitions.
This knowledge cross-sharing platform also provided opportunities for the participants to acquire industry insights and keep abreast with the latest technology and solutions to address climate change challenges.
The theme for PSC2022 was “Future Ready Petrochemicals” and it featured two special industry leaders’ addresses, one executive leaders’ forum, six sessions and 32 speakers and moderators covering three key topics – decarbonisation of operations, circular economy practices and enablers to support the transition.
The PSC2022 exhibition which was held alongside the conference took up one hall at KLCC and had 49 exhibitors whereas the networking dinner at Mandarin Oriental Hotel was attended by around 500 participants.
